This is quite an intuative idea, he has extrapilated that the understanding a whale is a mammal is quite a modern discovery in comparison to when it was written and taking what was understood at that time. A whale was likely to have been seen as a large fish.

Atheists know the difference, and they also know its not relevant to the question. Living in a fish is doesn’t make anymore sense than living in a whale, and given that there really aren’t any “fish” you could fit inside without being ripped apart, its just intuitive that they meant whale.
